Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring - Live reporting
from the VICI Racing pits

6:40 PM
The heavens have opened and we have had an hour's worth of rain. The
track is awash and there have been numeous crashes in the supporting
races which are going on. At Sebring everything that isn't concrete
turns swiftly to mud and this is now the case, and with big pools
appearing across the infield access roads, its getting messy. In the
garages all talk of a hot, dry weekend has stopped apruptly and
everyone is now considering another variable that could be thrown
into the tough mix of this gruelling race tomorrow...rain... |
|
12:50 PM Motor racing
is also about the fans, and in ALMS there is a big and loyal
following. We're into the autograph session now and the drivers are
being kept very busy by the stream of passionate fans who want to
meet their heros, talk about the race and get their autographs. And
of course have their pictures taken with the Kumho girls. |
 |
 |
12:15 PM Motor racing
is about fast cars and glamour. And in the case of VICI Racing the
glamour is provided by the girls from tire development partner Kumho
Tire who drop into the paddock at lunchtime. Nathan and Craig
somehow find time in their hectic schedule to do the welcoming
duties... |
|
12:10 PM Porsche always
presents a stunning looking race car, and the new 2008-specification
RSR is no different. The most distinguishing feature of the new GT3
RSR is the front end which received major improvements to the
aerodynamics. The majority of innovations however are hidden under
the weight-optimised body. Aside from the easily recognisable
additional spoilers on the front apron, so-called flicks which sweep
round the ends of the front spoiler, an optimised air ducting with
newly-designed side air outlets generates more downforce and reduces
drag. The rear end including the rear wing has been carried over
from last year's car.

12:00 AM Midday and preparation
for the race is well underway. The car looks more shell than racer
as parts are changed ready for the 10:05 AM start tomorrow morning.
Routine parts such as new brake discs and pads are fitted. |
|
9:55
AM Nathan and Craig are scrambling in and out of the cockpit
practicing driver changes, while the pit crew go through their
routines. With many crew members, as well as driving strength, being
new this week, everyone wants all techniques to be perfected; vital
seconds can be won or lost during the pit stops. |
 |
 |
9:40
AM There is one practice session this morning open to all the
ALMS classes. However the team will sit this one out. They're quite
happy with where we are at with now with development and set up and
are preparing the car for tomorrow's 12-hour race. It's a hive of
activity under the awning as routine parts are installed and minor
detail issues are checked off the list, down to cleaning the car. |
|
8:40
AM It's a warm and sunny morning in Sebring, a blue sky with
just a few wisps of cloud. After highs of 79 degrees F on Wednesday
and 80 yesterday, the weather forecasters are predicting highs of 82
on today and 86 on race day. The chance of rain is being put at 20 %
today and 10 % tomorrow. |
