Porsche 930 Cabriolet

One of our earliest programmes saw us create the ultimate Porsche 930, a car that is forever associated with VICI.

Structurally VICI used their wide experience with lightweight racing materials to good use. All the body panels and the bonnet were made from Kevlar, while to further reduce weight, the doors were fabricated from aluminum. The chassis itself was reinforced with special aluminum struts which increased torsional rigidity by 80%. The VICI Cabriolet version was considerably stiffer than any standard 930 Coupe.

Technically the VICI 930/930 Cabriolet was at least ten years ahead of its time. To create the ultimate car, no compromises were allowed in the project, and for example the braking system was drawn from the Posche 956/962, along with a whole raft of motorsport derived components.

The engine was a 3.4-litre, 6-cylinder twin turbo (KKK K27), with twin-spark plugs, six independent ignition coils (no distributor), one single throttle for each of the six cylinders, an intake manifold from 962, likewise the oil pump, titanium rods, 935-derived camshafts and valves, with racing rockers and lifters, etc.

The power we achieved was a highly satisfying 850 bhp at 8.200 rpm and 1.6 bar boost, and 750 Nm torque. The whole car weighed, including 80 litres of petrol 1.220 kg, which is less than a Volkswagen GTI today...

One leading French motoring magazine described the 930 Cabriolet as "Le cabrio plus rapide du monde" (the fastest cabriolet in the world). The Porsche 930 Cabriolet programme, which started life in 1987, was, in all its guises, to continue until 1995.
